This brief booklet is aimed at helping bungalow owners better plan improvements and repairs, while also preserving the important historic details that make theirs bungalows unique. For ease of use, all recommendations in the booklet are into practical “Do” and “Don’ts” and many are illustrated with example photos.
An additional excellent resource is the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards that provide guiding concepts for protecting historic buildings, sites, structures, and districts. They address such issues as maintaining, repairing, or replacing historic materials, as well as designing new additions or making alternations. Though the BBPI design guidelines apply to many bungalows, some homes may require additional guidance than what the BBPI design guidelines recommend, in those case, the homeowners should refer to the Secretary Interior’s Standards, contact the Berwyn Bungalow Preservation Coordinator. or the Berwyn Historical Preservation Commission for guidance. All the contact information is available on the last page of the design guidelines.
