Healthy Homes and Lead Poisoning Prevention Seminar

The primary focus of CoHo is supporting and promoting adaptive reuse and preservation of historic homes, however we recognize that this provides us a unique opportunity to be a driver of environmental justice and health equity initiatives as it relates to historic and safe housing. As we promote historical preservation and restoration, we are concerned that do-it-yourself inclined residents may be exposed to hazards in the home, this is why CoHo started this Health Homes initiative.

Bungalows on Tap: Sustainable Gardening in Urban Yards

To celebrate Earth Day, join us on Wednesday, April 18, as we welcome Art and Linda’s Flowers, the 2009 winner of the Conservation Foundation Conservation@Home award to discuss sustainable gardening and the use of native plants in landscaping.

Art and Linda’s philosophy is to “capture the spirit of the natural world and transform people’s gardens to reflect the beauty of nature,” so join us and learn how native plants and sustainable practices can:

- Create wildlife, prairie or butterfly gardens that attract all sorts of birds and butterflies

- Create gardens in shady areas using woodland plants such as spring ephemeral, ferns, grasses and sedges

- Create rain gardens in wet places like areas near downspouts

As we discuss the usage of native plants, you will also learn what it takes to protect and create yards that are environmentally friendly, conserve water and be eligible for certification as a wildlife haven and environmentally friendly landscape by the Conservation Foundation.

Registration IS required for this FREE event.

UNLEADED: Renovations shouldn’t threaten your family’s health ! Learn how to do it right with tips and available tools and equipment from CoHo.

Lead poisoning affects children’s health and development, especially brain development.   It is primarily caused by a child’s exposure to deteriorating lead-based paint through ingestion of paint chips or inhalation of lead dust created during home renovation.   Exposure to lead can result in learning disabilities, as well as behavior and developmental problems.  Illinois has the highest lead-poisoning rate of any state in the nation, and Berwyn was designated one of the Illinois Department of Public Health’s “high risk zip codes” for lead poisoning.

While the primary focus of CoHo is supporting and promoting adaptive reuse and preservation of historic homes, we recognize that this provides us a unique opportunity to be a driver of environmental justice and health equity initiatives as it relates to safe housing.  It is for this reason that we have partnered with Jack’s Rental to make HEPA negative air filter machines, HEPA vacuums and other resources available to help you reduce potential lead exposure during your renovation projects.

Join us at the next Bungalows on Tap, Thursday February 23 @ 7:00 PM at Fitzgerald’s Nighclub, to learn about lead hazards in old homes and receive information on how you can access, FREE OF RENTAL CHARGES, specialty HEPA filtered equipment for your next DIY project.
